See that Dell computer over there? Well, I have one. It has a Maxtor 160GB HDD which for 20 months was running extremely well without any problems. Then, Sunday 12th March comes along (isn't bad stuff only supposed to happen tomorrow?) and the HDD gets corrupted, a sector fails and the entire thing has to be formatted. This means no data, no stories... in short no Life in London 37 until Monday 20th March (at the earliest.) Tough break I guess.

A good free iPod site

I have scrutinised several of these schemes for a few months now... the promises always sound ridiculously fantastic with relatively easy systems to win a free iPod.
"Win an Ipod" is now the most common pop-up that I see, even with Firefox running with several extensions, and I think I have found a scheme (FreePay's "Get a free iPod") that I am happy to endorse. De-bunking the Intel iMac performance rumours
So Apple made a huge fuss about the speed of the new Intel iMacs. This had been scrutinised by many people and videos, photos and timesheets were produced, some to the contrary and some in corroboration. Final bits
I want to thank Google for being a fantastic company and especially in their two responses to Bell South and the US Department of Justice (although the latter caused their shares to fall 8%). More information about these responses in the show!
Secondly, information about Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the effect that Vista's delayed launch has on the Microsoft Support for Windows XP Home. They will now be supporting it through 2008 - not only until 2007 as previously stated by the company.

WMF Vulnerability is a Microsoft backdoor?
This I found at Digg.com, clicking through too me to Security Now! Episode 22 which Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte do. It is a show about security on Windows machines. This episode said that potentially this was not a vulnerability but a Microsoft backdoor for them to make changes on the computer.

NBC Content in the UK
NBC does some very interesting shows. I would love the idea of them following the ABC UK model, which was to launch a channel: abc1 - Sky channel 281. Now on abc1 I can watch shows that would have no chance to air. The only NBC offering here is CNBC which is similar to MSNBC and generally shows financial news. Their late night content is good, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brian's shows are on but apart from that there is very little. Jon Stewart is now on More4 (Sky: 165) which is great to see but I want to watch Saturday Night Live and Last Call with Carson Daly but these shows just aren't available.

I'm guessing this is due to my switching to QuickTime Pro. I've reverted to Audacity for Life in London 26 and on
This affected Gidgets Ga Ga's Spirit of the Season which is an awful shame because that track is beautiful. It will feature as the theme track in future episodes and I'll take a lot more care with the audio before it gets out.
Somehow this nightmare passed my quality checking - I listened to the .WAV file, and then encoded it to .MP3 - not listening the second time because it sounded fine in the lossless format.

Again, my sincere apologies.

In my opinion, Podsafe artists put a lot more work, care and passion into their songs as compared to what licensed music artists do. Their music is determined by management who have both eyes on the bottom line and could be deaf , it would not make a difference to the quality of music that they are putting out.
On the other hand, Podsafe artists really care about their music and so the music that they put out is of a higher quality and shows dedication, not processed beats that have been thrown together by men in suits but imaginative work that is lovingly recorded by people who are passionate about what they are doing.

Radio playing tracks from the PMN
This is unacceptable. Why should "they" be allowed to play music from the PMN if podcasters are not allowed the play licensed music. Considering the quality of content on the PMN, it is no suprise that they want to play that music but it does not make sense and is against the PMN's Terms and Conditions, I believe is what Adam Curry stated in the Daily Source Code.

The mainstream media have completely lost focus on what to report. In these fires, we should not be blaming Texaco and Total but congratulating the measures that meant no-one has died. This is what we should be proud of, instead of just looking for someone to blame.

Citizen Journalism
A positive aspect of the BBC's coverage of the Hemel Hemstead fires is that they used a lot of "amateur" content. This is wonderful because it is progress towards a society where users and creators aren't so segregated. Of course there is a value in experience but claiming this and barring completely those without is reckless.

...Was wonderful. I had a day off because it was the annual Carol Service at St. Albans Abbey and I didn't go so I had a relaxing, peaceful day. I managed to catch up on podcasts, read some articles and just enjoy having free time, which is becoming increasingly rare.

My brother just bought an Archos AV560 - what a wonderful find. He found it for £300 at Currys, which is part of the Dixons Group and the device is not sold anywhere else. There were only six devices in stock and he was really lucky to get it.

It is an excellent little device, recording video off the TV, or decoder (Sky, TiVo..), or media recorder (VCR, DVD..) and has a 60GB Hard Drive, with a 4" widescreen 480 x 272 LCD. Really top of the line and so beautifully engineered with the brushed aluminium exterior

However, things turned sour when he started to play a demo video. I noticed that there was a bright green pixel. It has been there throughout and had been faulty. This means that he will exchange it tomorrow for a fully working unit but it's such a shame because of the inconvenience.

SchoolWork has become so much that it is cramping into my Podcast listening time. At the moment I have 35 Unplayed, 789MB of amazing audio that I just have too little time for. I'll be listening to them over the next few days but it is somewhat irritating.

Podcasts are getting longer and longer these days, I remember when most of mine were 5 - 20 minutes long and now a lot of them are 40 minutes +, I shouldn't complain, they are excellent podcasts and I enjoy them but it requires a lot more time to put aside, it now requires setting aside an hour to listen. Don't get me wrong, I love it but with my GCSE exams, I have so little time on my hands..

Toshiba makes excellent LCD HDTVs - I reccomend the Stasia 27WL56 which we just bought. The point that makes it stand out so much is the HDMI input which means it is most definitely HD Ready.

However, you'll need a Decoder (in the UK: Sky box) and a Media Recorder (DVD, DVR, VCR etc...), three scart connections and two aerial connections. This is th e basic setup.

Standard Definition broadcasts look poor on HDTVs. It's a shame and has been pointed out before, because the screen is so good the flaws in the broadcast show up well. Watch an old episode of Friends and a new one to see the difference most obviously on an HDTV.

My current setup had a 15 year old Sony Trinitron CRT - now that the HDTV is here, have so many missing cables - for example, I own zero Scart cables whatsoever!

Harry Potter - The Goblet of Fire. Went to see it on Saturday night. It was well produced and directed but I take up the set design as flawed. Not grandoise enough for my impressions from the books.

I have no idea what is going on with iTunes, the Website button on the Life in London entry directs to the GarageBand page! Why?!! I would like to know if this also means that people who click Subsribe are being directed to the Feedburner page or the GarageBand feed - I will do a crude test of this and hopefully no issues will arrive but they might, will post here with more information.

UPDATE: ABSURD! Upon subscribing to my podcast (snigger: you'd have thought I've already done that) I looked at the description of the entire podcast and it pointed the RSS feed to the Feedburner feed. PHEW!
